Refining The Living Area Experience

!±8± Refining The Living Area Experience

While many people may have a different opinion of what an ideal living room would be, few would argue with one that provides all the right amenities and an open living space. A regular living area is easy to set up and make functional, but making the extra step and decorating with a theme makes it an experience. While food ought to always be within easy reach, the designer should also thoroughly plan for changes in use of the room.

The initial step is developing the room's layout. The living room is more than a movie room for most households, so planning a comfortable area for family visits is excellent. It is always wise to focus one or a few seats as the major experience areas for TV and surround sound. In situations where movies and television will be enjoyed by several people, it is a good idea to consider a multi seat center point. In these cases, having the TV pushed farther back and the speakers placed wider apart makes the positioning impact less noticeable. Although most family rooms have only one, giving the family members their own home theater seats will help make everyone happy and comfortable.

If the person possesses a very large living room to work with, adding three couches is a great design idea. From the home theatre chairs, the couches ought to be on the sides, but still pointed towards the TV so that everyone can experience watching a movie. These make great seats for guests that come over for movie night, but will not provide the perfect movie experience, since they are not at the focal point. If the designer wishes to give everyone the right experience, it could be a good idea to raise the couches behind the principal seating area. The only problem with that type of setup is that the living room will be dedicated to watching movies, and more couches would need to exist for small parties or when people are simply coming over to visit.

If the kitchen is simply not near the living room, building a mini bar with a place for a popcorn machine is a wonderful idea. Although it might seem unnecessary, it helps to have a separate area to have snacks and alcohol locked away from the kids.

To help make the area your own, creating a theme or mood provides a personal touch. Dimmable lighting offers a classy ambience while being versatile enough for any need. In an area that will need a lot of lights, it may be a good idea to use off-white compact fluorescent bulbs or color changing LED's to increase life. Having bulbs burnt out in a stylish living room takes away from the environment dramatically, so keeping them all working is a must.
